I have just found the web page that was the reason that Al Gore invented
the internet: The Gerbils Color Palette. I don't know about you, but I can't WAIT to read about
caring for Mongolian Gerbils in the classic De gerbil als gezelschapsdier
by Fred Petrij and Netty de Wit. Gosh- gerbils. No choice really: you gotta love them.
Went and saw "The Hours" yesterday with Andrea. Imagine the life of the
depressive- scared
to leave the bedroom in the morning, forced to put on a cheery face because
all those around you are monitoring you like some ticking bomb.
Imagine living with a depressive- always vigilant; always fearful of
a horrid and fatal ending for your loved one; always
poised to take action; always too eager to pretend that today is a good
day and that "it" is not a problem.
But what is worse-
An end to that kind of life? Or that life continuing? ....
Just as I was thinking that spring was here,
it snowed! One inch of white
fuzzy stuff. Good caving weather.
Spend half an hour walking round in the snow; staring at trees,
but not seeing them; cogs in my head spinning so fast that
they were smoking. Why? Well, in the shower that morning
an idea arrived. No fanfare, it just appeared and nonchalantly
mentioned that
what Kareem is doing with
IQ subsumes treatment learning. In his framework, the difference between
hunting for a treatment or hunting for a classifier is merely adding one
more dimension. This realization was profound, exciting, shocking, thrilling,
exhausting.
New journal article accepted, co-authored with Eliza "Simulations
for very early lifecycle quality evaluations",
to Journal of Software Process: Improvement and Practice.
It's based on her work here over last summer.
Two reasons to celebrate that article. First, it is a journal pub which
is no bad thing. Second, it is my 150-th(!!) paper.
I remember, back in 1986, my supervisor suggesting
that I write my first academic paper and me saying "er... how do I
do that?". Guess I worked it out.
A moments silence please for all the trees I have killed.

Last night, my Prolog class started getting Prolog.
Looking at their work, I can finally see
the lights coming on.
Hey, you know what? A lot of the issues regarding
WME design are common to OO and RDBMS design. And rules are easy
for begineers to grasp. Hmmm... new way to teach KE with some good SE
thrown in?
Memo to self: don't teach 2 night classes per week and the SE chair
job. Wretchedly tired at end of week. No energy for
anything save Perl/Prolog hacking.
Speaking of which, had that "oh dear" moment.
Everything is MUCH SIMPLER if WME values are lists
and identity is stored seperately. Dump years of work.
How could I, you are asking yourself,
have been so foolish?
More seriously, Kareem is writing up his FSS results on defect data.
It is a bit of a Samson temple smash: software
defect detectors are soooo simple.

Spring here. Warm winds.
All these dead bushes exploding in yellow flowers.
Waking up in the
bedroom tower, bright sunshine spilling through the windows.
Driving to Fairmont through trees with light red halos.
Much good talking: at WVU with the CSEE working group; at Fairmont
with graduate students re cool ideas or during a data mining seminar
they just gave today (and did a great job too).
But- the best talking of all-
at porch of Brew pub talking trash as the sun (and beer) went down.
Everyone at pub- Dray, Eddy, Crystal, Lisa, Gandhi (well, maybe not Gandhi). | | March 23, 2003 |
#web pages=50Helen left yesterday after a 10 day visit. She got passed her Ph.D. exam
and then we spent quality time emailing each other from the other end
of the couch. Then I wrote 50 web pages. Just your usual weekend. |
