(Here's me being a mite heavy handed with the graphics compression software on the Mac. Next time, I'll be more generous with my disk space!)

Two days at NSF doing panel stuff. Gosh darn some folks can't write a clear proposal.

Bojan there. We spoke much on the WVU search for a Tim replacement. Not going terribly well. I started wondering if there was part time work I could do there, on-site, next year. Talked about to Helen and she pointed out that if I did 5 months around summer then we could do a month apart at start/end then she could hang in WV for three months of summer. She started raving about how she loved WV and how much she is not in love with Pacific NorthWest. She loves the job but there's no streets full of dogwoods here. And no snow.

Went to Kentucky at invitation of Jane Hayes to give a talk. Felt that it was just a mid-west town. Then the seafood kept coming and looking better all the time. Talk went well- they want me back for a visit next Jan. And me and Jane are talking about an NSF proposal- she has some NICE industry contacts. Perfect for doing empirical work.

Left via Lexington airport and it was SOOOO relaxed. Kind of like most airports before 9/11.

John Powell and Dave in Portland for a LURCH-fest. John was here for two days, Dave was here for 2 weeks.

We did Bombay cricket club and drove round hills and walked round parks.

Dave had no internet in his hotel so he'd come round to our place to get the wireless. If we were late getting in, we'd find him on the stairs logged onto our network, happily surfing away.

Very successful trip. Dave got two new students of mine (Ryan and Tom) up to speed with LURCH. And, shock horror, Dave is now talking about doing a Ph.D. Great stuff.

Spend Saturday doing Portland sights,

Went to Mt. Hood in the afternoon. Surprisingly, the trip was a little boring. Still in a slump that I can't shake.

In the morning, went down to the farmer's market. Lots of fruit and woodwork and crystal sold by guys looking like Jerry Garcia.

Spring is here and the tulips want to burn your eyes out.

Kid in purple in purple tulips.

Statue in downtown Vancouver Park.

Families at play around the farmer's market..

Mt. Hood is splendid indeed but its miles of driving through some dull timber country.

The view around Hood was nice but somehow it didn't do it for me.

Snow boarding on crack. Well, snow boarder with crack showing.
