 | Writing |
When writing me an essay, feel free to disagree with anything
and everything I say. But do it in the "correct" way.
Let me tell you what I mean by "correct". Let me also advise
you that if you write me an essay, I'll mark it as follows.
|
 | Standard |
30 marks.
For standard structural features:
Not be full of padding.
A recognizable introduction, body, and conclusion.
A used bibliography.
That is, all the references papers are actually discussed in the text.
|
 | Basic experience |
10 marks. Demonstrate
some basic experience with the problem at hand.
For example, clear define all the technical terms you use. |
 | Advanced Experience |
10 marks
Demonstrate some advanced experience
with the problem. For example, the paper might be well motivated via (e.g.)
the good use of example problem(s). |
 | Reflection |
15 marks.
Reflect on the problem at hand. For example,
some discussion of references or discussion of alternative solutions. |
 | Theory |
10 marks
Take some position on the problem at hand
and argue the
"what", "why", "so what", and "impact" of that position. |
 | Action Plan |
10 marks
Define some a test for your ideas. |
 | Action Results |
15 marks
Perform the test and evaluate the results |
 | Kludge |
Getting 100/100 on the above scale is a very ambitious goal.
In fact, it usually takes an entire undergraduate degree for students to make it
through experience and reflection.
Masters students might take another 2 years
to make it through to theory. And Ph.D. students might take another 5 years to
make it through to action results.
So, for graudate classes at the masters level, I usually mark as above
then multiply the result by 1.33; i.e. getting through to "theory" can give you a
mark of 99.75. |
